This painting overlooks Rome and the hills that surround it. In addition to the beautiful red tile roofs, it also depicts some key historic sites.
On the left is the magnificent fortress, the Castel’Sant’Angelo with it's sculpture of the archangel on top. It has been through many transitions in its long history. It was once the tomb of the Emperor Hadrian. It became a fortress of the Popes. And today it is a museum.
In the center is the Pantheon, reflecting golden light off it’s dome. Originally built by Marcus Agrippa as a gift to the city of Rome. It's dome is still an engineering marvel as the largest unsupported dome in the world.
The white building with pillars in the upper right is the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento built to honor King Vittorio Emanuele who first united Italy. It stands on the famous Capitoline Hill.
Past that, far in the distance, is the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore which sits on the Esquiline Hill.
Overlooking Rome are the Apennine Mountains that run the length of Italy.
