A gentle spring rain in Assisi deepens the colors of the verdant landscape and terra cotta tiles. Saint Francis, who loved nature, once walked these emerald green rolling hills.
The village of Assisi is built on Monte Subasio in Perugia. This is the view from there.
Monte Subasio is part of the Apennine Mountains. The rock from its quarries is tinted pink and is used in many Franciscan buildings.
In the center is la Chiesa di San Pietro which was built in the 10th century and has three beautiful rose windows. The stone used for the façade came from Monte Subasio.
A multitude of terracotta roof tiles sweep across the foreground of the the painting almost like stepping stones. They have a long history in Italy.
Archeologists say the tiles and method started appearing around 3,000 BC.
In the distance rain clouds and spring showers dampen the fields. They are emerald green with new growth.
