Riomaggiore combines ingenuity and beauty to create fine wine on the Italian Riviera.
Riomaggiore is the southern most village in the Cinque Terre founded by Greeks from Byzantium who settled high in the hills for protection. They transformed the rocky slopes into bountiful land by building miles of dry stone walls to create terraces where they could cultivate their vineyards.
Later when they became part of the Genoan Republic, they were able to relocate their town to the edge of the sea.
My painting shows the vineyards on the terraced hills overlooking the village and the sea. The village is tucked into the valley on the lower tight of the painting. Time has brought many changes to Riomaggiore, but a constant is the wine.
