The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is a sacred place adorned with frescos and art. It is at the summit of lush green Monte Subasio surrounded by farmland and scenic views.
The basilica was designed by Maestro Jacopo Tedesco 800 years ago.
It is composed of two Churches:
The Basilica Superiore is Gothic style and has a rose window (upper level on the right).
The Basilica Inferiore is Romanesque style and has three stained glass windows (on the left).
These two parts are connected by a staircase (on the right).
The Benediction Loggia is also between the two churches on the lower level. In the tympanum above the door is a rose window said to be the “most beautiful in the world”.
La Basilica di San Francesco d’Assisi is named after Saint Francis of Assisi who was born in this village. His relics are in the Basilica Inferiore.
Sculptures of the four evangelists surround the rose window of the Basilica Superiore.
The lower piazza is paved with a striped pattern.
