At the summit of Rome’s Aventine hill lies a garden fragrant with orange trees, shady walks and stunning views. “Il Giardino degli Aranci” will enchant you.
In 1932 Raffaele de Vico transformed the grounds of the Savelli palazzo (built in the late Middle Ages) into an airy garden covering 7,800 square meters. You can still see remnants of the palazzo and castle scattered around the garden today.
In my painting, umbrella pines in the foreground arch over the main promenade providing shade to refresh visitors.
The pastel colors of La Basilica di Santa Sabina sull’Aventino built in the 5th Century, glisten in the sun directly ahead.
The wall of golden stone running horizontally through my painting is the same one that surrounded the Savelli castle.
Just in front of the wall is a row of bitter orange trees for which this garden is famous.
