Here I am in Pizza San Marco, ready to research, sketch and photograph beautiful Venezia.
Venice is a city that seems to float on the turquoise waters of the lagoon it calls home. There is nothing quite like it!
It is known for style and the arts. For example, the Venice Film Festival is a fixture on the social calendar of many celebrities. And remember the photos of George and Amal Clooney cruising down the canals when they were here for their wedding?
The view from our room overlooking Venice.
But why do I like Venice? It has a unique personality that permeates every aspect of the place. The water lapping in the canals is a constant lullaby. The colors are luminous, lit from the sky above and then again from the light reflecting off the water.
Shimmering mosaics adorn the churches and public buildings because they are more easily able to withstand the damp climate of the lagoon. This type of art also reveals a Byzantine influence.
A bright day in front of the Palazzo Ducale.
Venice is on the east coast of Italy and was once one of the great seafaring empires. It faced Greece and Byzantium with much cultural exchange.
You can see the Byzantine influence in the architecture. Instead of rounded arches, you will find pointed ones here - often embellished with frothy swirls reminiscent of Prosecco. Go to Piazza San Marco and you will be surrounded by them!
Sunset over the city after a full day of exploring.
Venice is also known by another name - La Serenissima, which means “most serene”. It bears this title for lots of reasons, such as a stable political structure that lasted for centuries creating peace and prosperity for its people. But I like to think of it as a still point - that even with the exuberant chaos of tides of visitors, Venezia maintains its identity and endures.

I am already working on paintings of this fabulous place! Follow me on social media or sign up for my newsletter to see my work in progress.
Ciao!
