Castelmola
The soaring scene from Taormina’s Greek Theater, encompassing Etna and the Ionian Sea, gives you the feeling of gazing down from Mount Olympus. But your moment of being a Greek god may be interrupted by a glimmer in your peripheral vision. Far up to the left is an even higher gleaming city in the clouds.
View from Castelmola
Castelmola looks too cozy to be real, yet it is authentic with a long history. For Olympic gods among us, a footpath connects Castelmola with Taormina. It begins at the church of San Guiseppe, climbing Mount Tauro to the convent of the Madonna della Rocca. For mortals there is a regular road decorated with buses and taxis.
Piazza Chiesa Madre
Castelmola is topped by a castle, built on the foundations of the ancient Greek acropolis. There is a central piazzetta, and storybook streets paved with Etna’s volcanic stones lead you to cafes, shops, and restaurants. If you’re so dazzled you forget to snap a photo, fear not, Castelmola will leave a postcard image of hilltop perfection in your memory that will compel you return someday, to prove once again it is real.
