Have you been to the Roman stock exchange, Borsa Valoridi Roma? Not for financial purposes, but to see a treasure of a different sort. This one is from ancient Rome, 145 A.D. to be exact. It is Il Tempio di Adriano (the Temple of Hadrian).
It is in Piazza della Pietra not far from the Pantheon. So it is easy to see both since they are only a block or two apart.
When you get to the piazza, you see the remains of the North wall of the temple. Most prominent are the 11 white marble corinthian columns. They are imposing at 15 meters (45.21 ft.) high!
Directly behind them you see a wall that is somewhat dark and pockmarked with holes. This is what remains of the cella or inner temple. In antiquity, this wall was faced with great slabs of marble. The holes are where pegs were inserted to hang the marble. The facing has long since been removed for use in other structures.
The original complex was built by Emperor Antoninus Pius who was the successor and adopted son of Hadrian. It was located in the Campus Martius. This is a model of what it looked like.

What you see today was preserved when in the late 1600’s Pope Innocent XII commissioned Carlo Fontana to incorporate the remains into the design for a papal palazzo. It was in the 1830’s when it became the home of the stock exchange.
It’s amazing to see this majestic and ancient place, just steps away from so many other icons in this city. But if you are in the mood for something a bit lighter, there is a wonderful place to get gelato that is pretty close called Giolitti. I will write about it in a future post!
