The world loves Italian words almost as much as Italian food. Italian words are borrowed to describe important events like extravaganzas with confetti, and things to be avoided like fiascos and vendettas. This winter an Italian word on everyone’s mind is influenza. The term influenza is short for influenza del freddo or “influence of cold”. Italians believe that to stay well one must guard against the elements. It is no coincidence their word malaria translates to “bad air”.
Beginning in October Italians ensure the windows stay closed, and the neck and feet are covered at all times, to avoid correnti or “drafts”. Even in the hot months air-conditioning is viewed with suspicion. Correnti are believed to be behind headaches, colds, flu, pneumonia and muscle spasms. By dressing in layers of sweaters, scarves, wraps, and hats, like a cipolla, nothing is left to chance. Fortunately Italy offers such names as Armani, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, at the ready to cater all layering needs.
