With its captivating harmony of warm and cool that sparks visions of long sunny days, I knew immediately that I had to paint Vico Equense, Campania as soon as I glimpsed it!
This scene is threaded with contrasts that balance each other and enhance its vibrance! First there are the warm foreground tones set against the deep blues of the sea and sky. But additionally there is a combination of soft and hard that plays against each other - the defined shapes of the architecture and the soft focus water in the distance. And lastly a difference in weight - the heavy stone wall and buildings against the ethereal greenery and clouds.
You can see one of the landmarks of the town in my painting on the right, la Chiesa di San Marco Evangelista. It is the apricot building with the bell tower and dome.
Being the history lover that I am, I also can’t help learning about the origins of this place. It was founded by the Aequi in the 7th century BC and later when the region became a popular place for Romans to have summer villas, it was referred to as “Aequana” or “vicus aequensis” (vicus means village in Latin) .
This town is close to Sorrento, Vesuvio and Pompeii. And if you don’t mind hopping on the ferry (which I love to do!), Capri is just a short ride away.
