This lovely piazza is stunning in so many ways. On one side, it is lined with majestic architecture that has withstood the centuries only gaining personality with each season under the mediterranean sun. The other side of the piazza opens to an expansive view of Etna and the bay of Naxos sparkling to the horizon as it merges with the Ionian Sea.
In this painting you can see the baroque-style Chiesa di San Giuseppe built in the late 1600’s. Its bell tower is constructed of local stone from Taormina while the double balustrade leading to the entrance uses stone from Siracusa. The Torre dell'Orologio, built in the seventeenth century, is just off to the left.
This piazza is a true gathering place. It was originally called Piazza Sant'Agostino after a church that is just out of view on the right. Later its name was changed to Piazza IX Aprile to commemorate Garibaldi landing in Marsala to reunite Italy. (It turned out Garibaldi actually landed a month later, but that’s another story.)
To the right you can see a few of the many cafés that line the square. It is a popular meeting place and also a great way to dine with a view. You can also do as the locals do and fare una passeggiata (take an evening stroll).
Crossing the piazza is the Corso Umberto. It is Toarmina’s main thoroughfare that winds through the town. You can see it between the patterned tiles in the foreground and the buildings running along the piazza.
Taormina has a long and varied history. The area was already inhabited by the Siculi (ancient Sicilians) when the Greeks arrived to establish a colony in 735 BC. They founded the city on Monte Tauro and called it Tauromenion. Later in 212 BC, it became part of the Roman Empire and was known as Tauromenium. It has since been governed by a succession of rulers that inhabited the island through the ages. For example, the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Germans, French and Spanish to name a few. This unique cultural mix combined to make the rich heritage of the Taormina we know today.
