When in Venice, one of the most unique activities is to do is take a ride in a gondola. Nothing compares to viewing Venice from the water. You see things not visible from the walkways and bridges. Also it emphasizes one of the most important aspects of Venice, an ethereal quality that makes it appear like it is hovering between the lagoon and the sky. I attribute it to the light. The sunlight and blue sky reflect off the water bathing all Venice in glowing soft pastels.
Venice also evokes images of glamour, theater, opera, and adventure. But that day sitting in the gondola, something more ordinary caught my eye that was all the more beautiful for it.
This is Ponte San Pantalon, a scene from everyday Venezia, surrounded by homes bordering a glistening canal. The bridge connects two of the six districts of Venezia. The Sestiere di Santa Croce is the center of transportation and the first place one encounters if arriving by bus or car.
The Sestiere di San Polo is one of the oldest districts that goes back to the founding of La Serenissima. It is lively with shops, markets and attractions.
In my painting Ponte San Pantalon takes center stage with its beautiful patterned railing and stone construction. In Venice, bridges are shaped like an arch (instead of flat) so boats can easily pass underneath.
In the foreground Il Rio di Ca’Foscari, a large canal runs horizontally across the bottom the painting. The smaller canal leading back into the painting is Il Rio di San Pantalon.
On the right, the bridge opens onto the spacious Campo San Pantalon. (Campo is Venetian for piazza.) La Chiesa San Pantalon, one of the important churches of Venice, is on the same campo.
The buildings are a mix of residential, university, and shops, including the kiosk on the right.
