Il paese di Tassignano is a rural village in the middle of lush farmland. However this is Italy and its diminutive size doesn’t prevent it from having an impressive church to look over the fields.
Tassignano is a small village with an ancient past. In fact, it dates back at least 2,000 years to the days of Ancient Rome. It is probably named after a Roman named Taxinius who used to own this land. Archeological excavations have found a Domus (roman home with courtyard) and Termine (baths) dating to that time.
During the Renaissance, the village was often caught between the constant feuding of Florence and Lucca.
Chiesa di Santo Stefano protomartire, Tassignano
La Chiesa of Santo Stefano Protomartire is named after Santo Stefano of Greece who was the first Christian martyr. It began as a humble rural church in 799 and over the years it evolved though many phases. In the 11th century a bigger church was designed and built on its foundations. Then in 1695 the villagers decided it needed something more and the majestic campanile was added. Between the bell tower, dome and façade, this church is beautiful from every angle!
Corte Lucchese
La corte lucchese building style unique to the 10 km in and around Lucca.
It is characterized by two rural buildings that face each other with a courtyard in-between. One is usually a barn and the other a home with an arch (il callare) connecting them.
In my painting wide green fields typical of Tuscan farmland lead to the cozy village of Tassignano and its church.
La Chiesa di San Stefano Protomartire has an impressive dome which I painted with real turquoise. Its elegant campanile looks over the fields.
In the distance, the Carrara mountains form a blue violet backdrop to the red tile roofs and stone buildings. These mountains have been famous for their marble quarries since antiquity.
The buildings are a rural architectural style unique to the area around Lucca called Corte Lucchese.
On the left, a row of flowering white trees shows it is the beginning of spring.
On the right, a row of cypress trees lines the freshly ploughed field leading back to a stone wall with two turquoise gates.
