A bright moment every October in Houston is the Festa Italiana. At a time when many towns are awash in beer and bratwurst the campus of the University of St. Thomas explodes into a forest of Italian regional flags, Alfa Romeos, affogati, and tarantella dancers, all bathed in a soundtrack of Italian classical songs performed by local and international talents. After leading off the parade of 2017 tropical storm disasters Houstonians welcomed the opportunity to stop time in their ongoing recovery and rebuilding to embrace a simple seasonal tradition that reminded them what normal felt like. Whichever freeway one was on, electronic message signs displayed the route to the Festa Italiana.
Talk of Italian immigration in the United States usually focuses on the east coast, but in the late 1800s and early 1900s waves of Italian families immigrated to the Texas gulf coast. They worked as farmers, miners, railroad workers, and craftsmen. Italian grocery stores were once commonplace in Houston. Nowdays the very active Italian Culture and Community Center provides a headquarters for all things Italian. Throughout the year classes in Italian language, music, cooking, and art are offered, but the Festa Italiana is where all of the energy and creativity culminates.
This year the traditional activities of the Festa were in full bloom: a bocce tournament, grape stomping, sidewalk art, the roar of espresso machines and the engines of classic Ferraris. All were embraced as reminders that La Dolce Vita is only as far away as the nearest Italian traditions.
