Bologna has been a famous university town since the Middle Ages, a center for studying law and medicine. All of the studying must give one a good appetite, because this city is also known for its earthy and cozy cuisine. Piazza Maggiore is the center of Bologna. Lined with cafés, porticos and the historic Basilica di San Petronio. Turn the corner and visit Piazza Nettuno to see the dramatic fountain.
View the leaning towers of Bologna: there are two medieval towers that are leaning toward each other named after prominent local families in the twelfth century. Asinelli is the smaller one and Garisenda is the larger.
Walking the miles of porticos throughout the city is a perfect way to get acquainted with this historic city. They are 1000 years old and a UNESCO site.
