Neapolitan pizza made it, Sardinian shepherd songs are there, Panettone...perché no? The Christmas bread boosted with milk, eggs, candied citrus, zest, and raisins originated in Milan in the 1400s. It has slowly found its way around the globe, swept along with Italians as they emigrated, now flowing along their kitchen supply lines. Like pizza, panettone has proven adaptable to improvisation.
Panettone has been keeping company with gingerbread, eggnog, and candy canes long enough to be perceived as a Christmas staple by most, whether or not they partake. The current world patron of panettone, Stanislao Porzio, felt the time was right for the delicacy to capitalize on the moment. He mobilized a pantheon of Italian gastronomes to petition the United Nations to include panettone on its list of intangible cultural heritage. This was done to coincide with Re Panettone, the festival of Milanese sweet delicacies, in hopes that the presence of a chorus of fans would ring in success.
Pictured is a panettone from Sicily. This sweet bread draws its candied lemons from the foothills of Etna as panettone’s bright flavors splash a little sunshine onto the shortest days of the year.
