The Pont du Gard is a stunning gift from history! If you haven't been there check out these reasons to make the trip.
1. You’re a student of Roman history.
It may be France now but the Pont du Gard was constructed in the first century A.D. by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, the son-in-law of Augustus, when this area was part Roman Gaul. It was a bridge of the aqueduct that supplied water to the town of Nemausus, modern day Nîmes, and has been a UNESO World Heritage Site since 1985.
2. You’re an architecture fan.
The Pont Du Gard was constructed almost entirely without mortar using numbered stones that fit perfectly together. It is one of the highest aqueduct bridges with three levels of arches to prevent buckling. Six arches make up the first level, 11 are on the second, and 35 arches form the top level with the water conduit. At 48.8 meters it crosses the modern river Gardon with a descent of only 2.5 centimeters.
3. You’re an engineering aficionado.
The Post du Gard is part of the Nemausus (Nîmes) aqueduct built in the first century. It supplied a reliable source of water to fountains, baths, and homes. As it entered Nemausus it was channeled into a castellum divisorum which routed the water to the different parts of the city.
There is an onsite museum where you can view the topography and visualize the network that it was a part of.
4. You love geography.
Look around, you're still in the civilizational crossroads of Provence. Close by are prehistoric cave paintings, towns named after Celtic gods, ancient dry stone buildings (capitelles), and majestic olive trees.
5. It’s easy.
The Pont du Gard is just a short scenic drive from much of southern France. The towns of Nîmes, Avignon, Marseille, and Montpellier are all in the neighborhood.
